Sustainability in requests for proposals

Based on the Guidance for Eco-friendly Procurement, sustainability has been assigned a more prominent role among HMC’s contract award criteria.

Avoiding wasted food

A number of strategies are pursued to avoid wasting food at our trade fairs. In certain cases, perishable food is offered at half price or donated to food banks after the end of the fair. Food banks from Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein were able to recover as much as 20 tonnes of food after the end of INTERNORGA 2023.

100 per cent renewable electricity

Since 2011, 100 per cent of the electricity purchased by HMC has come from renewable sources.

Reuse of exhibition equipment

Exhibitors can book high-quality multi-use solutions from the HMC online booking site for services. The range of re-usable or recyclable materials available will be expanded over time.

Waste separation

Participants in trade fairs and congresses are requested to avoid unnecessary waste and use resources responsibly. Exhibiting companies are provided with waste separation opportunities.

Logistics

Our local logistics traffic is managed using a smart slot-type system, and optimised continuously. The fleet of logistics vehicles on exhibition premises already consists entirely of e-trucks. Needless to say, HMC’s logistics partner has submitted a sustainability strategy of its own.

Catering

Culinary enjoyment without regrets requires detailed quality management as well as processes that take sustainability and environment protection seriously. Therefore, our catering partner Käfer gives preference to regional, seasonal and organic food supplies and has implemented an ambitious sustainability strategy.

Carbon neutral by 2040

According to the agenda of the State and City of Hamburg, all of the city’s public-sector organisations are to show a carbon-neutral emission balance by 2040. This official policy consequently applies to Hamburg Messe und Congress (HMC), as well.
